Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Arkansas legislators urge Trump to reconsider the denial of disaster relief

The governor of Arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and the entire delegation of the Congress of the State Republican Party urged President Donald Trump to reconsider after federal emergency management denied the state application For federal disaster relief after a series of mortal storms last month.

After severe storms arrived in the State in mid -March, Sanders requested disaster relief through FEMA, under what is known as a great disaster statement. The application was denied.

“As Governor Sanders pointed out to his application, these storms caused catastrophic damage throughout the state, which resulted in disastrous amounts, generalized destruction to households and companies, the death of three arkansanes and injuries to many more”, the two Republican senators of the State and four members of the GOP house. wrote in a letter of April 21 To Trump. “Given the cumulative impact and the magnitude of the destruction of these severe climatic events, federal assistance is vital to ensure that state and local communities have the necessary capacities to rebuild.”

This is not the first time that FEMA has denied recent requests. Earlier this month, Democratic Governor Bob Ferguson, from Washington, said FEMA had denied the request of his state of federal disasters derived from a “bomb cyclone” that criticized the state last November.

“This is another worrying example of the retention of federal government funds,” Ferguson said In a statement. “Washington’s communities have been waiting for months the resources they need to completely recover from the devastating storms last winter, and this decision will cause more delays. We are going to appeal.”

Fema too rejected a request From the North Carolina Democratic governor, Josh Stein, to extending 100% of federal funds for the elimination of debris related to the devastating Hulatene Helnene from the past autumn beyond an initial timeline of 180 days.

However, the situation in Arkansas marks the first time that Republicans have publicly delayed requests for fema relief.

Sanders served as the White House Secretary during Trump’s first mandate.

ABC News has requested FEMA comments on why Arkansas’s request was denied.

During a visit to parts of North Carolina that Helene was still mistreated by Helene, Trump abruptly criticized Fema and suggested that states could handle disaster relief better than the federal government.

“You want to use your status to solve it and not waste your time calling Fema,” he said. “And then FEMA arrives here and they don’t know the area. They have never been in the area, and they want to give you rules that you have never heard. They want to bring people who are not as good as the people you already have. And FEMA has turned out to be a disaster.”

In January, Trump issued an executive order that created a review advice to examine the agency and make recommendations to review it.
